Security and Access
No one should enter the mouse room except Robyn Durand, Gisel Flores-Montoya, and student workers employed by one of these two, or students enrolled in classes under Gisel. Shop and security people should be escorted into the rooms by one of the principal people involved. Tours must be scheduled through Robyn Durand and the faculty investigator.
Keys cannot be loaned out to anyone other than people employed to care for or research the mice and who have received training to do so. Doors should never be propped open, and if it is necessary to move large items, open doors should be monitored and closed as soon as possible. Noise levels should be kept to a minimum around animals.
In cases of emergency…
Emergencies include fire, flood, break-in, or animal injury. Do not try to move animals yourself. Call Robyn Durand’s cell phone, leave a message, and wait for a call back. She will determine what to do. If she cannot be reached, call the faculty investigator, Gisel Flores-Montoya.
Weekend and Holiday Care
Mouse food and watering systems and their general health must be checked daily, including weekends and holidays. Robyn Durand will oversee this. If you cannot make your shift to check, you must call her so that she knows to stop in and check on the animals. Even though cleaning is not needed daily, checking on the animals to make sure they are safe is a daily necessity.
For holiday periods, Robyn Durand will coordinate staff to check on the animals. Often Robyn Durand and Gisel Flores-Montoya will work out a schedule so that the mice are checked daily, especially when student workers are unavailable.
