The Community Board on Sexual Misconduct is the College body charged with adjudicating complaints of student-to-student sexual misconduct and advising the College on the maintenance and development of the Policies Against Sexual Misconduct.


Faculty: Four faculty serve on this committee. Each is appointed by the Faculty Affairs Committee to serve a three-year term. 

Staff: Four staff serve on this committee. The Title IX Coordinator serves in an ex officio, non-voting capacity.  The Title IX Coordinator chairs the committee and is responsible for arranging and leading meetings and training.  Three additional staff are appointed by the President’s Office to serve a three-year term.

Students: Five student-at-large positions are appointed in collaboration with the Carleton Student Association each fall to serve during the academic year.

Preferred Skills or Experience for Committee Members

All representatives on the Board are expected to be available for the entire academic year. Comprehensive training take place on Wednesdays during weeks 2-6 each term from 4:00-5:15 p.m. Training topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Carleton’s Policies Against Sexual Misconduct and the Student Complaint Process;
  • Resources for students;
  • Facilitation;
  • Sensitivity;
  • Current events/trends;
  • Practice hearings and scenarios;
  • FERPA and legal privacy requirements; and
  • Discussion on current scholarship and case studies relevant to sexual misconduct.

When a hearing is needed, only the three selected panel members will be in attendance (one faculty, one staff, one student) and will hear a case.
