Last Wednesday, professors and students gathered in the Weitz Center as the Humanities Center unveiled the submissions to its contest, which judged student submissions of artwork.

The Humanities Center at Carleton is delighted to have a new space! After years of being a “Virtual Center”, we are now a Center with a physical center: the Humanities Center office in Weitz 223! Our new space is wonderful in every way… except one: there are some very bare wall expanses in Weitz 223! SO – we are issuing a challenge to the Carleton Student Body ($ prize will be awarded to winner): Can you create a work of art that represents your vision of the humanities? 

Carleton’s three-year-old virtual Humanities Center is about to get physical. Since the start of the 2011-2012 school year, the innovative center that was designed to foster the college’s intellectual and cultural life now has a tangible office in the Weitz Center for Creativity.

Victoria Morse, History. Discussant: David Lefkowitz, Art and Art History

Gazing around the familiar Mediterranean world in 1338, what did an Italian priest and polemicist see?  Through maps, texts and drawings, Opicino de Canistris attempted to explain to contemporary Christians what their place was in the world and why it mattered; Victoria Morse will attempt to explain his explanation to a 21st-century audience. Sponsored by the Learning and Teaching Center and the Humanities Center.

Maryse Condé is the most prolific and arguably the most internationally acclaimed French Caribbean author. Professor Emerita of Columbia University, Condé is the author of over twenty novels including Segu, Windward Heights, Crossing the Mangrove, and Tituba, Black Witch of Salem, as well as Tales from the Heart: True Stories from My Childhood. She has garnered numerous literary awards including the Marguerite Yourcenar Prize, the “Grand Prix du Roman Métis” and the prestigious “Prix de l’Académie française.” Through her historical fiction, Condé has recreated lost histories and given voice to lesser-known populations of the African diaspora. In her autobiographical works, Condé raises poignant social and philosophical questions about being raised in a post-colonial society. Sponsored by French and Francophone Studies, the Humanities Center, The Elizabeth Nason Distinguished Women Visitors Fund, and African and African American Studies.
