Julia Strand (B.A., Tufts University; PhD., Washington University in St. Louis) teaches courses including Introduction to Psychology, the Psychology of Spoken Words, and Sensation & Perception. Her research focuses on how humans are able to turn sensory information about speech into meaningful representations. Topics of research include how cognitive abilities influence language perception, what traits of words promote easy recognition, how word recognition abilities change with age, and how visual information (seeing the talker) influences language processing.

Naseem Dillman-Hasso ’20

Naseem (B.A., Carleton College) is the current lab manager of the Perception Lab. He is interested in environmental psychology, speech perception, and open science. Naseem also enjoys riding his bike, being outside, watching Netflix, and not taking himself too seriously.

Paula Campos Gonzalez ’20
Danny was born in Bogota, Colombia, grew up in MN since 4th grade, and moved to Birmingham summer of 2019. She’s a 2020 Psych major with a passion for healthcare and theater. She loves dancing, the outdoors, and dogs, especially her 2 pups. Danny hopes to be a pediatrician one day and work with under-served and under-represented communities to promote healthcare access for all.

Siddharth Chundru ’25
Siddharth comes from Bangalore, India, and although he doesn’t know what he wants to major in yet, he is interested in a variety of subjects including cognitive science, computer science and economics. He has done clinical research in radiation oncology and neurology in the past. Outside the lab, you can find Siddharth listening to Hip Hop or playing Dota 2.

Ginifer Coffin ’22
Ginifer is a Linguistics major from Minnesota. Before coming to Carleton, she did a stint in the army, studied Korean, and earned an AS in computer science. She is interested in language education and revitalizing endangered languages. When not in the lab, she splits her time between the library and refueling at the nearest coffee joint.

Katherine Finstuen-Magro ’20

Kate is a Computer Science major from Washington, DC. She has a many interests in psychology, particularly in speech acquisition and interpersonal communication. Outside of the classroom, she is a member of the Women’s Rugby team and tutors at the local youth center. Kate intends to attend medical school after Carleton.

Claire is a Psychology major and Cognitive Science/Chinese minor from San Diego, California. She’s interested in cognition, developmental psychology, and language acquisition. When not in school she enjoys landscape/life drawing, swimming, and playing mahjong. Claire is also a big fan of watching really bad, disastrous movies.

ZhaoBin is a potential psych/cog sci/comp sci/maths/stats major. He lives in Singapore. He is constantly exploring diverse interests. For now he is most interested in artificial intelligence. He likes doing yoga and running in the arb.

Lucia is a local Minnesotan and senior Psychology major. She loves learning about the clinical applications of speech perception research and how to improve scientific practices. When she’s not in the lab, you can find Lucia running in the Arb, sipping some earl grey tea, hunting lilacs across campus, or singing some sweet tunes in her acapella group.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jed is a prospective Cognitive Science major interested in music cognition and its use in therapy and other real world applications. Beyond his studies, Jed is an aggressive fan of Moana, Taylor Swift, and housework.

Zhihan grew up in Suzhou, China. As a potential Mathematics major, he is currently focused on understanding how neural networks work. His favorite book on neural networks is Neural networks for pattern recognition by Christopher Bishop. He has done research in Procedural Content Generation using Machine Learning. He loves playing soccer on sunny weekends.
